    Sputnik 50th anniversary

Yesterday was the 50th anniversary of the launch of Sputnik, the launch that sparked the space race between the United States and the Soviet Union. Sputnik 1, the world's first earth orbiting artificial satellite, which looks simple by today's standards. Sputnik weighed in at 183 pounds, was a 22 inch aluminum sphere that beeped, yet rapidly pushed the world towards the first man on the moon, modern telecommunications, and many other things we take advantage of today.
